Xmas Eve (Part 1)
Scene: Living Room. A table set up to wrap Christmas gifts.
Bree - an older woman, before her 49th wedding anniversary, always happy not silly, educated, mother of two, Grandmother or 3. Loves to be Grandma. Homemaker and proud of it.
Bree: (Enter. Call off stage) Mikey, have you found the gift yet? (Then to the
audience) He didn't respond, that means he hasn't found it yet. (Then realizes she has not
introduced herself) Oh, Good Evening, my name is Brenda Ruth Esther Eaton, my husband
calls me Bree. His name (points to husband off stage) is Michael Henry Eaton. This will be
our 50th Christmas together.
Mikey, have you found the gift yet? (Then to the audience) He didn't respond, that means
he hasn't found it yet. (back to the old subject) Our family avoids traditions, except at
Christmas! We drip with Christmas traditions and memories. We were married 2 days after
Christmas. Then 5 years later, Michael Jr. was born, 1:30 AM, Christmas Morn. When Mike
Jr. was nine, he was in the Christmas Program at church. That evening Mike Sr. and I went
forward to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, exactly 3 months after Mike Jr. came to
know the Lord.
Mikey, have you found the gift yet? (Then to the audience) He didn't respond, that means
he hasn't found it yet. (back to the old subject) My mother died on my son's 11th
birthday. She was driving to our house for Christmas Dinner, and a drunk driver missed a
stop sign . . . (Long Pause) During the year, our family hates traditions, but at
Christmas time, we make up for it. When it's time to decorate the tree, there is always
hot chocolate and egg nog. When the men are done stringing the lights outside, we all go
out to see the "Turning on of the Lights." The Saturday before Christmas, we
always go Christmas Caroling as a family. Then of course, there's the "Tradition of
the Christmas Cookies."
Mikey, have you found the gift yet? (Then to the audience) He didn't respond, that means
he hasn't found it yet. (back to the old subject) You know, Mikey and I were married two
days after Christmas. We almost didn't get married. Thank God for our friend, Grant.
Oh, I better get the Hot Chocolate started. (Bree exits)
