She He
By Ben

She’s 9.
He doesn’t like girls.
Jump rope is more than a game for this little girl. She tells them all, “I’m gonna marry that boy some day.”

He’s 16.
She’s still in High School.
The laughter and giddiness of young love is shinning from both their faces. The conversation is trivial. They’re not sure what they are supposed to say.

She’s 21.
He’s a Junior, majoring in business.
He can’t afford it, but he just put a down payment on a rock that cost more than his last three cars put together.

He’s 29.
She’s planning a surprise birthday party.
He has been dreading this event for years. She had bought all the black balloons she could find. Both expect a crowd when they open the door.

She’s 37.
He’s a banker.
She doesn’t know it yet, but child number four is about to enter the world. She’ll call him at the bank. He’ll rush to the hospital to await his last born son.

He’s 62
She’s just found out she’s a great grandmother.
For 40 years they’ve sat across the table from one another. He reads the newspaper. She rubs lotion on her hand. Neither look at the menu, they’ve been here before.

She’s 88.
His birthday was today.
He missed it by four days. A tear runs down her cheek. There is no regret. There is no “Good Bye.” There is just love. as she whispers, “See you later.”
